The Overlooked Key to Nervous System Resilience

Strengthening the Subtle Nervous System Is Key to Long Term Resilience — Here’s Why

Nervous system regulation has become a big focus in recent years, and rightly so.

In the yoga world, we’ve seen an explosion of tools to support this, restorative yoga, breathwork, meditation, yoga nidra, and more. These practices are incredibly valuable, rooted in ancient wisdom, and essential to a holistic yogic lifestyle.

But what I’ve observed again and again, in myself, other practitioners, and in private students is that even with all these tools, we often find ourselves cycling back to nervous system dysregulation.

It’s as if we’re constantly getting short-circuited.

Why? Because it’s only half the story!

We should note that some constitutions are more sensitive to deregulation than others, yet with the current technological age and increased pace of modern life, we see a rise in nervous system sensitivity in all constitutions.

Here’s something traditional yoga offers that I rarely see addressed:

👉 The physical nervous system reflects the state of the subtle nervous system (nādīs, or energetic channels).

👉 If the nādīs are weak, the physical nervous system becomes more fragile, sensitive, easily overloaded, and quick to burn out.

👉 Strengthening the nādīs isn’t just helpful, it’s essential for building true, long-term nervous system resilience.

And while calming practices are important, I rarely see them effectively strengthen the subtle nervous system.

Strength isn’t just about muscle or extra vinyasas, it’s about cultivating an inner strength, a specific intelligence in the astral/subtle body so the nādīs can hold and conduct energy clearly and steadily.

This doesn’t just help with stress tolerance, it creates the foundation for more advanced yogic work. It’s one of yoga’s most overlooked (but essential) ingredients.

If you’ve felt stuck in the cycle of nervous system dysregulation despite using many tools, understanding the importance of the subtle body might be the missing piece.
